At some point over this weekend (hopefully!!) I'm going to grab a cheap mechanical USB mouse and keyboard, and so a very rough prototype and video it to show you lot that it actually works. I think for the rotary encoder I'll just use the mousewheel (since it is one anyway...), and for the slidey thing I suspect I'll just grab the optical encoder wheel and glue a stick to the shaft. That should work just fine (but I'm sure I'll have some issue with it, law of sod and all). I probably won't bother with a box just yet... just a little rig to suspend the mechanical stuff.

I can see a problem already. The fader thing (which is misplaced in the picture oops) will have no resistance when i attach it directly to the shaft, so if i wanted to leave it in say the 45% position it will fall to the 0 position. I think we're going to have to go down the route of using a geared flywheel like the ones on vision mixers do to provide some resistance. The added bonus of this is it would make fades much smoother :)
