Going up to the stratosphere is fun! MAKE went to space, so why can't we?

[edit] Proposal

We are to build a Radiosonde platform for which a payload may be lifted to the lower stratosphere (about 60,000ft) to take measurements.

Naxxtor is currently doing a second year project which will allow measurements to be taken including positioning data (GPS based Interial Guidance) and atmospheric data (temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure). This will be built with a radiosonde platform in mind, and comply to all the regulations required. The protocol for this system will be released at a later date (when the project nears completion probably)

A flight system is required which will log and transmit the data, as well as activate the cutdown device when certain parameters are met (e.g. distance from starting point or altitude). The payload needs to have a parachute as well as an insulating container (it gets pretty chilly up there, down to -40C), as well as providing a power source for the whole system (plus backups).

A method of locating the payload once it has returned to Earth will also be required - radio direction finding as well as acoustic backups may be required.
